ENGENSEC project: the Next generation experts in Cyber Security

What is the ENGENSEC project?

ENGENSEC project(«Educating the Next generation experts in Cyber Security: the new EU-recognized Master’s program») is realized under Tempus IV. Tempus is the European Union’s programme dedicated to the higher education development in Partner Countries which are not EU members, mainly through university cooperation projects. The project has been funded with support from the European Commission, The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive program (EACEA). The main objective of the ENGENSEC project is to create a new Master’s program in area of  IT Security. The project duration is from 1 Dec 2013 till 30 Nov 2016.

Why is information security important?

Cybersecurity is very important for every country in the world. Russia is not an exception. The number of cybercrimes has been increasing year over year. Harmful programs and Internet frauds are actively created, distributed, and used. There is a decree of the President of Russia from 15.01.13 N 31s “About creation of a state system for the detection, prevention and liquidation of the effects of computer attacks on the information resources of the Russian Federation”. Recruiting companies report about the keen demand for information security specialists. Joint efforts of the project partners to create the master program will help to train specialists of higher level.

Who participates in the project?

Project partners are 22 organizations from 7 countries: Sweden, Poland, Latvia, Russia, Ukraine, Greece and Germany. All the project participants are divided in to the following groups: academic –universities, industrial - noncommercial organizations in the information security area, governmental – authorities, student – association of students. Responsible for the project and project grant holder is Blekinge Institute of Technology (Karlskrona, Sweden).

Yaroslavl Demidov State University (YSU) is a coordinator for Russian partners. University Internet Center is in charge of the project participation.

What should be done during the project?

First of all, it is necessary to define the structure of joint master program, develop a unified curriculum for every university – project partner. After that, students of YSU have a possibility to study a part of the master program in foreign universities and complete the double diploma of YSU and a partner university. The student exchange is two-way, so foreign students may also study this master program in YSU.

A very important objective is to create new information security courses and modernize the existing ones. The best experts of non-diversified areas from academic and industrial organizations will work for the objective realization. It is planned to develop educational resources in the following areas: Digital Forensics, Ethical Hacking, Penetration Testing, Web Security and Malware Analysis. Once the education process is impossible without practice, a special cloud security laboratory is being developed for student practice at the moment. To adopt the courses to a university curriculum, it will be necessary to train teachers and show them how to use the developed materials and methods .A summer school for teachers will be organized for that purpose.
