Abstract: This paper deals with various approaches to the defi nition of «I», its establishment and determination of its functions in activities of a subject. Some theories consider “I” as a system of concepts, ideas of a subject about him/herself that apply to various domains of human life. Some other theories view «I» as a concept of one own physical and personal characteristics. The use of one term «Ego» by different authors does not exclude differences in interpretations of its interaction with other sub-structures of consciousness – «It», «Super-Ego». Overall, authors converge on the idea that discrepancies in some concepts about self are the cause for the emergence of tension and the reason that stimulates subject’s activities towards the change of him/herself.
